Your Wolf Hood Isn't Broken, Your House Is Sealed: Makeup Air, the 400 CFM Rule and Central Park's Post-2002 Homes
If a Wolf hood is loud and the kitchen still fills with smoke in a post-2002 Central Park house, the cause is usually makeup air rather than the blower: Denver's 2021 IRC Section M1503.6 requires makeup air above 400 CFM. Crack a window and watch whether capture returns.
Denver’s adopted residential code — the 2021 IRC, at Section M1503.6 — requires that a domestic kitchen exhaust system capable of exhausting more than 400 CFM be given makeup air at approximately the rate it exhausts, through at least one compliant damper, discharged into the same room or a space that communicates with it.
A Wolf hood over a professional rangetop passes 400 CFM without trying. And Central Park, the redevelopment of the former Stapleton airport across more than 4,700 acres, is thousands of homes built from 2002 onward, every one of them to a modern tight-envelope energy code.
Put those two sentences together and you have the most common hood complaint in that part of Denver, along with the reason replacing the blower will not touch it.
What people here assume is wrong with it
The hood is loud, the kitchen still fills with smoke, so the blower must be failing or a damper must be stuck. That is the call, almost word for word, and on a post-2002 house it is usually the wrong diagnosis. A blower that is audibly working at full speed is a blower that is turning; noise is evidence of effort, not of failure.
The second assumption is that a hood which used to capture and now does not must have changed. Often nothing about the hood has changed at all. What changed was the weather, or a new door sweep, or a bathroom fan running at the same time.
What is actually happening
Air that leaves the house has to be replaced by air entering it. An older house leaks enough through its own imperfections to supply a hood without anyone noticing. A house air-sealed to current standards has almost no such leakage to give, so running a high-capacity hood pulls the whole building negative.
The blower then spins against a pressure difference it cannot overcome, and capture collapses. Smoke rolls out from under the canopy instead of being drawn up into it. A makeup-air damper that is present but restricted whistles or chatters. Exterior doors become noticeably hard to pull open. And the one that matters most: an atmospherically vented water heater or fireplace can reverse, drawing combustion products back down its own flue into the house.
That last item is why this is not merely an appliance annoyance. A hood that cannot get makeup air is a house-pressure problem with a combustion-safety edge to it.
The evidence, in the order we look at it
One test separates the two possible causes, and you can run it before anyone is booked. Set the hood to high with something smoking gently on the rangetop, watch what the canopy does, then crack a window on the far side of the room and watch again. If capture returns the moment the window opens, the hood is doing its job and the house is the limiting factor.
From there the order is: is a makeup-air system present at all; if it is, is the interlock actually wired so the damper opens when the hood runs; and if it is wired, does the damper move freely or has it stuck shut. A great many of these were installed, signed off, and then never opened again.
Only after that do we test the hood itself — blower amp draw against its rating, wheel condition and balance, speed control, and the duct run for length, elbows, crushed flex and a roof or wall cap that has painted itself closed. In LoDo, where a loft kitchen sits on an interior wall and the duct is whatever fitted between the beams, that duct check moves to the front of the queue instead, because there the restriction is usually real.
The fix that holds
There are three outcomes and they belong to different trades, which is worth knowing before you book anyone.
If no makeup-air provision exists on a house that needs one, the fix is a mechanical contractor’s job — a makeup-air unit sized to the hood, interlocked to it, discharging into the kitchen or a communicating space as the code section describes. If the provision exists but the interlock was never wired, that is a short piece of work and it transforms the hood’s behaviour. If the damper has stuck, it gets freed, cleaned and proved to open on demand.
What sits squarely with us is the hood: blower motor and wheel, speed control, baffle filters, lighting that buzzes or half-lights, and grease finding its way back out of the liner onto the rangetop. A dead touch panel or control is $460 to $850. In Congress Park bungalows and Berkeley galleys, where the kitchen is small and the duct run was threaded through original framing, those genuinely are the faults we find.
Where to stop and call
Stop and get it looked at properly if opening a window changes the picture, if a damper whistles, if doors resist when the hood runs, or if you ever smell exhaust near a water heater or fireplace while cooking. That last one is a stop-cooking-now item, not a book-it-next-week item.

Why does opening a window fix my Wolf hood?
Because the hood was never broken. In an air-sealed house the air pulled out has nowhere to come back in, so the building goes negative and capture collapses even at full blower speed. Cracking a window supplies what the house cannot. If capture returns the instant the window opens, the problem is house pressure, and a new blower would change nothing at all.
